How to be a Math Wizard
Have you ever looked at someone and just wondered how they got so good at math or even labeled them as a math wizard? Then you ponder on how you can emulate that wizardry in a subject that gives you the jitters. Math gets a rather common label of being a subject too hard to learn. Ask any average student and there is a possibility that they are not confident on the subject.
However, math
isn’t exactly the fearsome entity the majority of us assume it to be. True,
math is different from other subjects when you strip it down to bare bones.
Most subjects are subjective in nature but math is objective. It’s black and
white or to be more precise, right or wrong. There’s not a lot of scope for
anything in between. But here’s the catch, learning mathematics is as
easy or difficult as you make it.
The math
wizards that fascinate you are still just normal human beings and they aren’t
born with an extra brain or anything. It’s just that they have more refined
methods of learning and dedication, both of which play an important part. So,
what are these methods that you can use to become a math wizard?
Practice and
hard work
There’s nothing
that can substitute these two. Math is based on formulas and logic. The more
you practice, the more they get hard wired into your brain. At the end of the
day, you cannot make math up like more descriptive subjects. It’s simply not
possible.
Steps and logic
need to be followed in a very specific order and if you don’t keep working hard
on them, chances are that you will forget them. Any student or professional
good at math will tell you the same thing and that is just unparalleled, golden
advice to get started on your math expertise journey.
Work on
weaknesses
You open your
math book, see that difficult sum and contemplate for a bit. Eventually, you
decide to leave it for later or think that you might not need to solve that for
an exam. In the end, it comes back to bite you during an exam or so on, and
then you are not ready to face it.
This is a
dangerous practice and they cost you vital marks during exams. So, identify
your weak points while learning mathematics and start working on them.
Keep at it until it becomes clear to you as other math concepts that you can do
with ease. Only when you master your weaknesses at one stage, you can do it at
the next.
Find a study
partner
Learning with
friends is always something to look forward to, especially when the subjects
are a bit daunting to you. In this case, math. What it essentially does is that
it gives you a more relaxed environment to work on problems. With them, you can
express doubts and unsolvable problems without any anxiety or such.
You may never
know but your friend could indeed have the solution to a problem that was
bugging you. They could also have a better or efficient way to solve certain
problems that you could make use of. You could also end up helping them with
their problem which adds to your practice.
Make use of tech tools
With the rapid
development of technology, learning math has become more accessible and
simpler. There are so many resources and tools online that can aid you towards
some mastery of the subject. Math learning websites such as Exploring
Infinities have courses
and math games to ease you into becoming much more confident and increase
curiosity about math.
Write down problems, solutions and
rough work
How often have
you looked at a math problem and started doing it in your head? Sometimes you
end up solving them then and there but a lot of times, your mind may not be
able to do entire problems. That’s because you don’t have all the steps or the
required info to glance at.
Use a notebook
to write down the problems and solve them. It is much better that way as your
brain won’t have to continuously recall steps or numbers or values. It can now
fully focus on the solving which will give you much better results.
Change your perspective of
learning mathematics
Yes, we get it.
Your parents, peers and maybe even teachers might have painted a scary picture
of math to you. Chances are that you too have not grown very fond of it and now
have a bad perspective of it to see it as something to just get over with.
That is not how
these math wizards do it. They view it as something that is interesting
and intriguing. It is taken upon as a learning experience where they want to
come out with a better understanding of it. Hence, it is important you do the
same or at least get close to it.
Never give up
People who
excel in any particular field, in this instance math, never give up. Whatever
challenge they face, they might not be able to deal with it right away but they
keep at it until an answer is found. Having this attitude is very beneficial in
the domain of math.
Take out that
difficult problem and sit with it one day. If it does not work, sit with it
again on the next day. Ask for help if you need, use tools or any measures
necessary but mostly, never throw down the towel.
People are not
born math wizards, they become one
No one is just
born with an expertise in math. Everyone starts off with the basics and then
moves on to more complex stuff. However, you have to have the interest and will
to do so. Then you have to follow it up with requisite hard work. There are no
shortcuts to becoming a math wizard.
You have to go
through the whole ordeal despite the setbacks and so on. Exploring
Infinities aims to make learning
mathematics an experience for students so that they develop a keenness for
it and not just find solutions to their problems. So, when you see it as
something not-so-scary, there’s a good chance you succeed at it and hey, before
you realize it, you have taken the first step towards becoming a math wizard.
