The Role of Mathematics In Education

The Role of Mathematics In Education

The existence of math in human society is nearly as old as humanity itself. The subject has evolved from simple calculations to the broad and complex discipline it is today. However, math has been a crucial area of study from ancient times, and as we move towards the 21st-century global economy, STEM education has become increasingly significant. But as we talk about math for children, it is more than just a subject in the classroom, and the horizon of math is beyond the test scores and mark sheets.

Why is math so important?

Sparks the curiosity to learn

To understand the importance of math, let us begin with the etymology of the word mathematics, the Greek word máthēma means "what one learns", "what one gets to know", hence also "study" and "science", and in modern Greek just "lesson". Thus, the roots for math can be traced as 'knowing' and 'learning', which can be further derived as knowing one's cognitive abilities and the possibilities that come along when one trains their brain with a mathematical approach.

Introduces to critical thinking

While math classes for kids have been highly restricted to a classroom subject, which they more often dread, the area has a lot to deliver to their development, one aspect of which is problem-solving and critical thinking. While math classes for kids succeed in introducing numbers, calculations, methods and formulas, they very often fail to present the benefit of learning math just for fun.

Math is universal

The math concepts are universal, and unlike other subjects, the learning is not constrained to a specific culture or a particular race. Therefore, math can be termed as a universal language of concepts learned and taught regardless of where the learner is on the planet. Besides, the application of math is also as universal as the concepts, thus creating a uniformity of the practices in real-life situations.

Encourages a knack for accuracy

Math is all about precision and system-based learning. Therefore, one of the critical benefits of stressing math for children from a young age is to foster diligence, caution, and conscientiousness. Encouraging these abilities can help the children in primary learning objectives and simple day to day tasks like time management, understanding money matters, measurements etc., from a young age.

Shapes the future

No matter in which way we look at it, math can always bring success. There is no doubt that a successful math learner can contribute to the country's success while building their own career. Whether or not math for children in their academic learning period transforms into a career pathway, it will always help them deal with their day-to-day life efficiently.

But unfortunately, math tops as the most disliked subject and has a lot of anxiety and stress attached to it. While the quest of the teachers and the parents is to find a solution for this problem, most math classes for kids revolve around the same old approach.

While in reality, the kids need to introduce to math with a perspective that is intriguing and fun. Thus, courses like Math Wizard by Exploring Infinities can be an excellent starting point for young minds to develop their cognitive abilities enthusiasm in math under a comprehensive learning ecosystem supported by technology. MathWizard as a course is tailored for the age group of 6–10-year-old, as the understanding of the concepts is very much dependent on the age of the learner.
